      For etymology geeks like me it's just an interesting word.

      Basically it involves rapidly changing the direction of a ship relative to the direction of the wind so that it can progress against the wind. The word eventually came to be in widespread use as a non-sailing term, as Merriam-Webster notes:

      "tack: a course or method of action; especially one sharply divergent from that previously followed"
